Becks coming to Australia!
David Beckham’s LA Galaxy will travel to Australia to play Hyundai A-league club The Newcastle Jets under a coup described by the NSW Premier as a great opportunity
to show off Australia’s bid credentials. The Jets will host the Galaxy, who also feature American World Cup hero Landon Donovan, at Newcastle’s EnergyAustralia Stadium on November 27 at 7.30pm in a one-off friendly.
The match will be televised live and is expected to attract 23,000 fans and bring more than $1 million to the economy. NSW Premier Kristina Keneally joined the Minister for the Hunter and MP for Newcastle Jodi McKay, Jets chairman Ken Edwards and A-League boss Lyall Gorman to announce details of the exhibition game.
“NSW is Australia’s premier state for major global events and we’re particularly keen to promote regional NSW destinations, so this is a great coup for the Hunter and the State,” Ms Keneally said. “Australia is a sport-loving nation and our passion for football has grown in recent years with the success of our Socceroos on the world stage. “NSW has recently hosted the successful Sydney International FIFA Fan Fest, Australia versus Paraguay match and the football-themed Breakfast on the Bridge.
“We want to show the world we are ready to host the World Cup in 2022 and securing major events such as this exclusive match for NSW puts us in a strong position during the bid process.” Head of the Hyundai A-League Lyall Gorman said the friendly would put the spotlight on football in Australia only a few days out from the 2018/2022 World Cup Host Announcement in Zurich on December 2.
“David Beckham is a huge figure in world football and it will be a great spectacle for the Hyundai A-League and the Newcastle Jets when he and his team play in the Hunter,” Mr Gorman said. Beckham is a bid ambassador for England which is bidding for the right to host the FIFA World Cup™ in 2018. He is expected to leave Australia immediately after the match and make his way to Zurich to help England push it s case on December 2.
